Many students perform strongly in school mathematics. They can calculate accurately, apply formulas correctly, and achieve excellent grades in class assessments.


Yet when they encounter an Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) question for the first time, many suddenly feel unsure where to begin.

Because competition mathematics tests something different.

A Two-Step Approach to AMC Preparation

That is why we have designed a two-part pathway for students preparing for the AMC and other mathematics competitions.


Step 1: July Holiday Program

Math Competition Preparation


The July Holiday Intensive is designed for students who want focused competition preparation before the AMC.


Over four days, students will:

  • Review key AMC knowledge points

  • Analyse common competition question types

  • Learn practical problem-solving techniques

  • Develop test-taking strategies

  • Complete mock tests and guided review

  • Build familiarity with competition-style thinking


The goal is simple:


Build familiarity, pacing, and confidence before the exam.


Students learn how competition questions are structured, what examiners are looking for, and how to approach unfamiliar problems with greater confidence.


Step 2: Term 3 Olympiad Maths

Long-Term Mathematical Thinking Growth


While the Holiday Program focuses on immediate competition readiness, Term 3 Olympiad Maths focuses on deeper and more lasting growth.


Students develop:

  • Logical reasoning

  • Abstract thinking

  • Geometric analysis

  • Number relationships

  • Problem decomposition

  • Strategic thinking


The emphasis shifts from:


"How do I get the answer?"

to

"How should I think about this problem?"


This distinction is important.


Students who develop strong mathematical thinking become more adaptable, more independent, and more capable of tackling unfamiliar challenges.

Level 6 Olympiad Maths

Building the Core Framework


Level 6 is ideal for students beginning their Olympiad Maths journey and building core logical thinking skills.


Term 3 topics include:

  • Thinking Algebraically

  • Ratio and Rate

  • Time, Distance and Speed

  • Whole Number Reasoning


Students begin moving beyond procedures and memorisation to understand the underlying patterns and structures that mathematics is built upon.


Goal: Build a strong foundation for competition mathematics.

Level 7 Olympiad Maths

Geometry and Advanced Thinking


Level 7 is designed for students ready for more challenging AMC, APMOPS, scholarship-style, and Olympiad questions.


Term 3 topics include:

  • Area, Perimeter, Volume and Surface Area

  • Congruent and Similar Shapes

  • Pythagoras’ Theorem

  • Circular Geometry and Polygons

  • Symmetry and Tessellation

  • Olympiad Geometry Problem Solving


Students strengthen:

  • Geometric reasoning

  • Spatial thinking

  • Multi-step problem solving

  • Advanced mathematical communication


Goal: Strengthen spatial reasoning and multi-step problem-solving skills.

The Bigger Picture

The AMC is an excellent opportunity for students to challenge themselves, but it is only one part of a much larger learning journey.


The most valuable outcome of competition mathematics is not a certificate or a score.


It is the ability to persist through difficult problems.


It is the confidence to attempt something unfamiliar.


It is the resilience to analyse, rethink, and try again when the first approach does not work.


Competition mathematics teaches students that challenging problems are not obstacles to avoid—they are opportunities to think more deeply.


And that is a skill that lasts long after the AMC has finished.
