Strong in English, but Stuck in Writing?

Many parents are surprised when a child who reads well, speaks confidently, and performs strongly in English still struggles when faced with a blank page.
The issue is often not English ability.
Instead, students may lack a clear framework for transforming ideas into structured, coherent, and purposeful writing.
A student can have excellent vocabulary and strong comprehension skills, yet still feel unsure about how to begin, how to organise their thoughts, or how to develop ideas into a complete piece of writing. Under exam conditions, these challenges become even more apparent.
This is particularly important for students preparing for scholarship examinations, selective-entry pathways, and accelerated learning programs such as SEAL, where writing is often assessed under strict time constraints and demanding marking criteria.
Why Do Students Struggle with Writing?
Many students experience one or more of the following challenges:
They do not know how to begin their writing.
Their ideas are present but poorly organised.
Paragraphs remain brief, repetitive, or underdeveloped.
They run out of time during assessments.
They are unsure how to edit and improve their own work.
These difficulties are common, even among capable students.
Writing is a complex skill that requires far more than grammar and spelling. Strong writing depends on a combination of idea generation, organisation, language control, and self-editing.
Writing Is More Than English
At Qs School, we view writing as a collection of interconnected skills.
Strong writers develop competency in four key areas:
Ideas
Knowing what to write and how to generate meaningful content.
Structure
Understanding how to organise information logically and effectively.
Language
Using vocabulary, sentence structures, and stylistic choices to communicate clearly and powerfully.
Editing
Recognising how to refine, improve, and strengthen a piece of writing.
These are transferable skills that support success not only in English, but across all learning areas and future academic pathways.
July Holiday Special Writing Program
To help students strengthen these essential skills, Qs School offers a focused Special Writing Program during the July holidays.
Designed with scholarship and SEAL preparation in mind, the program provides explicit instruction in two of the most commonly assessed writing forms.

Strong Writers Are Made, Not Born
Writing is not a talent possessed by a select few. It is a skill that can be explicitly taught, practised, refined, and mastered.
When students receive systematic instruction, clear frameworks, and opportunities for deliberate practice, they develop the confidence and capability to express their ideas effectively.
Whether your child is preparing for scholarship examinations, SEAL entry, or simply looking to become a stronger writer, developing writing skills is an investment that benefits every area of learning.
The July Holiday Special Writing Program and Term 3 Special Writing Program are designed to help students build lasting writing skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
