VCE Maths Methods Exam: How to Boost Your Score!

The clock is ticking! With only 10 days until the 2024 VCE Maths Methods exams (November 6th & 7th), Qs School is here to help you maximise your score. This post provides essential revision tips and exam techniques to ensure you're feeling confident and prepared.

2024 VCE MM Exam Information

Exam 1:

• Wednesday, November 6th, 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM

• No calculators or notes allowed (1 hour)

• 20% of total exam mark
  

Exam 2:

• Thursday, November 7th, 11:45 AM - 2:00 PM

• Calculators and notes permitted (2 hours)

• 40% of total exam mark

Maximising Your Marks

1. VCE Maths Methods Revision

Practice Exams:

• Simulate real exam conditions: 1 hour for Exam 1, 2 hours for Exam 2.

• Prioritize VCAA past exams: perfect for replicating exam style, difficulty, and question length.

• Mimic exam timing: practice exams under real exam times (e.g., 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM or 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM).

Learn from Mistakes:

• Analyse challenging questions, identifying and summarising them with notes.

• Highlight and memorise key terms, especially crucial for Exam 2.

2. VCE Maths Methods Exam Techniques

Time Management: Allocate 1.5 minutes per mark.

Question Analysis: Use marks to gauge expected answers. (e.g., a 3-mark question with only 1 answer suggests missing steps.)

CAS Calculator

• Master functions, menus, and commands.

• Avoid calculator errors.

• Use VCAA Chief Assessor's advice: avoid CAS syntax (e.g., ln(6) - use log e(6) instead).

Presentation

• Use a pen for clear, scannable answers. (Pencils allowed for graph sketching only.)

• Express answers in exact form unless specified otherwise.

• Use "=" to indicate new steps.

Notation: Avoid common errors: missing "dx" in integration, improper inverse function notation, incorrect equal signs.

"Show That" Questions: Don't skip steps.

"Hence" and "Hence, or otherwise":

• "Hence" requires using the previous answer for marks.

• "Hence, or otherwise" allows alternative approaches.

Question Connections: Look for links and clues within different parts of a large question.

Decimals: Use more decimals during calculations, rounding at the end.

Clarity: Ensure your final answer is clear and easily understandable for markers.
